Why I Always Start With Digestion Before Hormones

If you've been chasing hormonal symptoms without relief, no one may have asked the deeper question: why are your hormones off in the first place? Almost every time, the answer leads back to your gut.

Why I Always Start With Digestion Before Hormones

If you've been dealing with chronic symptoms - fatigue, brain fog, bloating, cycle irregularities, anxiety that doesn't match your life - there's a good chance someone along the way has told you it's hormonal. Maybe they tested your thyroid. Maybe they put you on birth control. Maybe they shrugged and said "it's just stress."

And maybe they were partially right. Your hormones might be off. But here's the question no one asked: why are they off?

That's where I start. And almost every time, the answer leads me back to the same place - your gut.

Your gut isn't just digesting food

When most people think about digestion, they think about bloating or heartburn. But your digestive system is doing so much more than breaking down last night's dinner.

It's where you absorb the nutrients your body needs to make hormones. It's where you metabolize and clear excess estrogen. It's home to the majority of your immune system. And it's in constant communication with your nervous system - what many practitioners call the gut-brain axis.

When digestion is compromised, everything downstream suffers. Your body can't build what it needs. It can't clear what it doesn't. And the hormonal symptoms you're chasing? They're often the effect, not the cause.

What this looks like in real life

Maybe you're eating well - really well - but you're still exhausted. That could mean you're not actually absorbing what you're eating. Your digestion is the gatekeeper.

Maybe your estrogen is high, but no one has looked at whether your gut is doing its job of clearing it. There's a collection of bacteria in your gut - sometimes called the estrobolome - that directly influences how estrogen is metabolized. If that's out of balance, your hormones will reflect it. No amount of hormone support will fix a clearance problem.

Maybe your anxiety spikes after meals, or you crash every afternoon at 2pm. That's your gut and your blood sugar talking to each other, and both of them are upstream of your adrenals and your hormones.

Why this gets skipped

Honestly? Because it's not flashy. Digestion isn't a trending topic. It's not a single supplement or a dramatic protocol. It's foundational, slow, unsexy work - and the conventional model isn't built for that.

A fifteen-minute appointment doesn't leave room for someone to ask how your digestion has changed since your second pregnancy, or whether you feel like food sits in your stomach for hours, or whether you've lost your appetite entirely and you're not sure when that started.

Those questions matter. They're the ones I ask first.

What I do instead

Before I look at hormones, I look at the foundations. Digestion is one of five foundations I assess with every woman I work with - alongside blood sugar, fatty acids, minerals, and hydration.

I want to know: is your body actually breaking down and absorbing what you're giving it? Because if the answer is no, nothing else we build on top of that will hold.

Once digestion is supported - and I mean truly supported, not just managed with a probiotic - something shifts. Energy starts to come back. Bloating quiets down. Sleep improves. And often, the hormonal symptoms that brought her in? They start softening on their own, without ever being directly addressed.

That's what root-cause care looks like. You don't chase the symptom. You nourish the ground underneath it.

Where to start

If this is landing for you - if you've been focused on your hormones and nothing is moving - I'd invite you to look one layer deeper.

If you want to go deeper on what your digestion is telling you, start there. Your body has been trying to communicate something. It might just be starting with your gut.

I built a free Foundations Quiz that helps you see which of the five foundations your body is asking for support with right now. It takes about five minutes, and it might reframe everything you thought you knew about what's going on.
