You Don't Have to Understand Energy Work for It to Work

If someone had told me five years ago that I'd become a reiki practitioner, I probably would have smiled politely and changed the subject. I was a research person. A show-me-the-evidence person. And then I had an experience I couldn't explain.

You Don't Have to Understand Energy Work for It to Work

If someone had told me five years ago that I'd become a reiki practitioner, I probably would have smiled politely and changed the subject. I was a research person. A show-me-the-evidence person. I wanted mechanisms and explanations and peer-reviewed studies.

And then I had an experience in my own body that I couldn't explain with any of that. So I had a choice: dismiss what I felt, or get curious about it.

I got curious. And it changed the way I practice.

The skeptic's dilemma

Here's the thing about energy work. It asks you to trust something you can't see on a lab report. And for women who've already been told their symptoms are "in their head," that's a big ask. You've spent years fighting to have your physical experience validated. The last thing you want is someone telling you your problem is energetic. It can feel like another version of dismissal.

I hear that. And I want to be clear: when I talk about energy work, I am not saying your symptoms aren't physical. They are. Your bloating is real. Your fatigue is real. Your pain is real. I'm saying there's an additional layer that influences how those physical symptoms behave. And working with that layer can make the physical interventions work better.

You don't have to call it energy. You can call it nervous system regulation. You can call it somatic release. You can call it deep relaxation. I don't care about the label. I care about what happens in your body when you receive it.

What I've watched happen

A woman comes in with her shoulders up by her ears, her jaw clenched, her breath shallow. Twenty minutes into a session, her breathing changes. Her hands unclench. Her stomach starts gurgling, which is a sign that her digestive system just came back online because her nervous system shifted out of fight-or-flight.

She didn't do anything. She didn't think her way into it. She didn't meditate or visualize or repeat a mantra. She just lay there. And her body did what it's been wanting to do: let go.

That's not magic. That's a nervous system that finally felt safe enough to release its grip. And whether you explain that through the lens of energy medicine or neuroscience, the result is the same. Her body shifted from protection into repair. And that shift changes everything downstream.

Why I don't need you to believe in it

I'm not asking you to adopt a worldview. I'm asking you to pay attention to what your body does.

If you lie down for a session and your breathing deepens, your tension releases, your gut starts moving, and you sleep better that night, does it matter whether you can explain why? Your body responded. That's the data point that matters.

Some of the women I've worked with came in as complete skeptics. They tried reiki because nothing else was working and they were out of options. They didn't believe in it. They didn't understand it. And their bodies responded anyway. Here's what reiki actually involves.

Because your body doesn't need your mind's permission to heal. It just needs the right conditions.

The conditions matter more than the explanation

This is what I've come to understand after years of practicing both nutrition and reiki. Healing isn't about finding the one right thing. It's about creating the conditions for the body to do what it already knows how to do.

Nutrition creates the physical conditions. The right raw materials. Stable blood sugar. Adequate minerals. A functioning digestive system.

Energy work creates the environmental conditions. A nervous system that feels safe. A body that isn't bracing against itself. Space for tension to release without force.

Neither one alone is usually sufficient for the women I work with. But together, they create something that's more than the sum of their parts.

If you're on the fence

Stay there. You don't have to jump. You don't have to commit to anything or understand anything or believe anything. If you're even a little curious, that's enough. A practical guide for your first experience.

And if you'd rather start with the physical foundations and see how far that takes you before considering the energetic layer, that's a completely valid path. My quiz and self-guided program are designed exactly for that. The energy work is there when you're ready. No pressure. No timeline.

Your body will tell you when it's time.
